Authority of your site (and it's position in search engines) based mostly on amount and quality of links from other sites there "quality" is a sum of text in the links and own authority of those linking sites.

How to appraise "authority" of certain site? There are several algorythms and most usual is Google's PageRank which is based on amount and quality of links to your site and has 11 grades from 0 (absolutely new and unknown site with few incoming links) to 10 (extremely popular site like Google.com itself or Wikipedia). Although there is no direct dependance between PR and search results (your site's content matters too) it's more likely to get good positions in search results (thus more visitors) if your site is "well known" to search engine and has higher PageRank (more incoming links).

Submitting your website to website directories is an excellent way to get quality 1 way links pointing to your websites. So we are offering links from sites which are well-known to search engines and have higher PageRank (up to 8). To achieve next PageRank your site need approximately 10 times more incoming links. For example to get PageRank 3 you need links from inner pages of like 300 sites clearly "visible" to search engines. For PR5 it's more like 15-50 thousands incoming links from few thousands sites. Results may vary - alot! - depending on certain pages PR: the higher PR linking page has - the more is your site's authority gain.
